A year ago, almost nobody searched for “AI SEO consultant.” Now it’s one of the fastest-growing terms in the SEO space, still small in raw numbers but climbing every single month. That’s not a fluke. It’s a direct reflection of how fast search behaviour itself is changing.
I’ve had more conversations about AI search in the past six months than in the previous five years combined. Most start the same way: a client asks whether they should be worried, and the honest answer is usually more nuanced than yes or no.
This is the plain-English version: what an AI SEO consultant actually does, why the role exists now, and how to know if you need one.

What does “AI SEO” actually mean?
AI SEO, sometimes called GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AEO (answer engine optimisation), is the practice of making sure your business gets found, understood, and accurately cited by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity, not just ranked in a traditional list of blue links.
It sits alongside traditional SEO rather than replacing it. Good AI visibility is still built on the same foundations: a fast, well-structured, genuinely useful website. It adds a layer on top, making your content easy for an AI model to extract, trust, and quote when it’s assembling an answer.
Why this has become a real search term, almost overnight
This isn’t a hypothetical shift. ChatGPT alone reached roughly 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, more than double what it had a year earlier, and around a third of consumers now say they begin their searches with an AI tool rather than a traditional search engine. Google’s AI Overviews reach a large share of searches too, layering AI-generated summaries directly onto results pages that used to be pure links.
The practical effect: a meaningful and growing slice of the research your potential customers do, comparing options, checking credibility, narrowing down a shortlist, now happens inside an AI conversation you can’t see, on a page you don’t control. If your business isn’t part of the answer an AI gives, you’re not losing a ranking position. You’re not in the conversation at all.
“AI hasn’t replaced SEO. It’s added a layer on top of it. If your site isn’t built to be trusted and cited by an AI model, you’re not losing a ranking position. You’re simply not part of the conversation.”

What an AI SEO consultant actually does
Day to day, it looks less exotic than the name suggests. It typically involves:
- Structuring content so AI models can extract it accurately: clear, well-organised pages with direct answers to specific questions, rather than long, meandering copy an AI has to work to interpret
- Building genuine topical authority, since AI models tend to favour sources that demonstrate real depth on a subject over sources that mention it in passing
- Getting cited by third parties, not just publishing more owned content. A meaningful share of what AI tools cite comes from press coverage, review sites, and independent sources rather than brand-owned pages, which means PR and content work start to overlap with SEO more than they used to
- Monitoring how your business actually shows up in AI answers: tracking whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Overviews mention you accurately (or at all) for the questions your customers are asking
- Keeping traditional SEO fundamentals solid, because AI models still lean heavily on the same signals of trust and relevance that have always mattered for search
None of this is new work, really. It’s the same approach I’ve always taken, applied to SERPs (search engine results pages) that look drastically different from how they did two years ago.
“AI search rewards the same thing good SEO always has: genuine expertise, demonstrated clearly, not just claimed. The businesses getting cited right now are the ones who did the work to earn it.”

Do you actually need one yet?
Not every business needs a dedicated AI SEO specialist right now, but a few signs suggest it’s worth prioritising sooner rather than later:
- Your customers do meaningful research before buying, such as comparing providers, checking credentials, and reading reviews. This is exactly the behaviour that’s moved into AI tools fastest
- You’re in a competitive or trust-sensitive category, where being the source an AI cites (or doesn’t) genuinely affects who gets picked
- You already invest in SEO or content and want that investment to keep paying off as search itself changes shape
- You’ve noticed AI Overviews or AI answers appearing for searches relevant to your business, whether or not you’re currently mentioned in them
When a client asks me this, I usually ask what their customers actually do before buying. If the answer is “not much research,” I tell them to hold off. I’d rather say that than take on work that doesn’t move the needle.
If none of that applies yet, traditional SEO fundamentals done well will still carry you a long way. AI visibility is best understood as an emerging layer on top of good SEO, not an urgent replacement for it.
I don’t think AI SEO is a trend to chase. It’s a genuine shift in how people find businesses, and it rewards the same patient, proof-led work that’s always worked. That’s the only kind of SEO I do.
AI SEO consultant: FAQs
What’s the difference between an AI SEO consultant and a regular SEO consultant?
A regular SEO consultant focuses on ranking in traditional search engine results. An AI SEO consultant does that too, but adds a specific focus on how AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews extract, trust, and cite content, which involves some different priorities around content structure, third-party citations, and how AI-generated answers are monitored.
Does AI SEO replace the need for traditional SEO?
No. AI models still rely heavily on the same trust and relevance signals traditional SEO has always built. A genuinely authoritative, well-structured site is still the foundation. AI SEO adds a layer on top of that foundation; it doesn’t substitute for it.
How do I know if my business is showing up in AI search results?
Ask the questions your customers would ask directly in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Mode, and see what comes back. It’s manual and imperfect, but it’s the most direct way to see whether you’re currently part of the answer. A consultant can also set up more systematic monitoring.
Is AI SEO expensive compared to traditional SEO?
It’s typically not a separate budget line so much as an extension of existing SEO and content work: the same senior strategic thinking applied with AI visibility specifically in mind, rather than an entirely new discipline requiring separate spend.
